The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a prominent youth development movement in India. It fosters leadership, discipline, and moral values among the nation's youth and aims to nurture responsible citizens committed to serving the country. Participation in NCC is voluntary, and it provides opportunities for holistic development encompassing physical fitness, adventure, and civic responsibility.
"Unity and Discipline" (Ekta aur Anushasan)
"I solemnly promise to serve my motherland with loyalty and abide by the rules of the National Cadet Corps. I will sincerely participate in every camp under the command of my commanding officer."
"We, the cadets of NCC, pledge to uphold the unity of India, be disciplined and responsible citizens, and undertake positive community service in a spirit of selflessness."
Established in 1948 under the National Cadet Corps Act, the NCC traces its roots to the University Officers Training Corps (UOTC), formed by the British in 1942. After the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars, the NCC syllabus shifted its focus from military training to leadership and social service, marking a significant evolution in its objectives.
The NCC is headed by a Director General, an Army officer of Lieutenant General rank, overseeing 17 Directorates across India. The State Directorates command Group Headquarters, led by Brigadiers or equivalent, with units commanded by Majors or Lieutenant Colonels.
The NCC flag symbolizes the unity and integration of the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings within the organization, as well as its commitment to the ideals of discipline, patriotism, and service to the nation.
